AI-powered trade-in for Foxway
Retailers and telcos across Europe were looking for a single partner that could handle trade-ins at scale – accurately, transparently, and across multiple device categories. Existing solutions were largely manual, inconsistent, and hard to scale. Foxway saw an opportunity to build something better: the Circular Platform, an AI-powered multi-vendor trade-in solution combining visual grading with Apple diagnostics. My work was on the store-facing side. When a customer trades in their old phone, the store agent evaluates its condition and determines the discount on the new device. That interaction is where the platform either earns confidence or loses it and my job was to make sure it earned it.

We gave store agents a tool they can trust to get the trade-in right...
…by reducing the possibility of human error
On Foxway's existing trade-in tool, grading depended on the agent's judgement. Four yes/no questions presented to the agent were guided by the platform but ultimately left room for mistakes. The new flow introduces AI visual grading combined with automated functional diagnostics, producing an objective assessment that doesn’t vary from agent to agent. Manual evaluation is still available but treated as a fallback option for when the device is not eligible for AI evaluation. The QR sticker attached to the trade-in device extends the accuracy beyond the screen connecting the digital record to the physical device all the way through to packaging, and potentially shipping in the future, so the right device always ends up in the right place.

Users can start the trade-in by either scanning the device info with the support device or entering the device's IMEI or model manually – the system then determines whether AI or manual evaluation is appropriate. From there, the flow guides agents at every step: when action is needed on the support device, the desktop directs attention there, and the support device shows its own specific instructions. Contextual help is available throughout for anyone who gets stuck.
The result is a process that works for someone on their first day as reliably as it does for someone who's been doing it for years.

Different retailers work differently, and the tool shouldn't dictate how. The final design supports a primary setup – desktop paired with a support device that acts as camera and scanner – while keeping tablet adaptability in mind for future development. A tablet's built-in camera means no support device is needed, allowing stores that work differently to adopt the platform without changing their setup.

The project piqued my interest from the start. The idea was innovative and presented a pretty hard nut to crack – exactly what I love to do. It didn't come without its challenges. I inherited a starting point from another designer and spent time finding my own direction within it. What I had initially wasn't working – the AI flow was forced into the same shape as the manual flow, and it showed. Midway through, something clicked. I finally understood how the desktop and support device should interact – and how a tablet could carry the full flow independently. I brought all the main interactions to the desktop, collapsed five steps into four, gave each step a distinctive layout, and rethought which interactions belonged in the main flow and which worked better as separate moments between steps. The result was cleaner, more logical, and better suited to the pace of a retail environment. The biggest learning didn't come from the design challenges at all. This project revealed some gaps in my communication skills. A blow for the ego – but ultimately fertilizer for becoming a better, more well-rounded designer
